Incidentally, I tried emacs (as opposed to Aquamacs) and it read DOTemacs.el and then read ciao.el with the warning that ciao.elc was older than ciao.el.

Could someone tell me how to recompile ciao.el to ciao.elc from within emacs (or Aquamacs).

From emacs simply do "M-x byte-recompile-file"
