We have fix the problems in the development version of Ciao available online: http://ciao-lang.org/download_latest.html
We expect to make an official new stable release soon.
Note that one of the bugs was in the example itself: The predicate append/3 is not anymore imported by default. In other words, the library lists must be loaded by the Prolog server before the first call to append/3. This can be done from the java code by calling: goal.useModule("library(lists)"); (See example0.java in the development version of Ciao).
