To answer my own questions. Ciao now works for me with emacs 22.2.1 The answer was to alter the ciao.el.body (by removing the ' from before: beginning-of-buffer) make make install

That fixed it! Question: Is the supplied ciao.el.body bugged. If so, why did emacs 21.3.1 tolerate it?
