The top level, the debugger, the standalone compiler, the documenter, the preprocessor, etc. are all command line tools and can all be used from a terminal, from a Makefile, or from a script for that matter. The reason why line editing and command history are not provided directly by the Ciao top level is because we have always believed that this is an orthogonal functionality that people like to get in their different, favourite ways (rlwrap, emacs, vim, eclipse, etc.). E.g., if you would like to have command line editing in a terminal, a simple way is to use rlwrap around the top level: rlwarp ciao And you can always just use emacs as a glorified terminal with: emacs -f ciao (this should just start a window with the top level). Regarding help, the Ciao manuals are in pdf and html and are very well indexed so it is straightforward to find help on anything, be it through the indexes or using search --no need for emacs! There are simple man pages for the command line tools, although admittedly they mostly point to the 'real' manuals available in pdf or html (or inf). Having said all that, we also provide a very nice graphical environment, based on emacs, which gives you many other things. People have also developed a Ciao environment for Eclipse with syntax coloring, source debugging, etc., and which is also used for other systems supporting Prolog, and there is Prolog support in vim, etc. Hope this helps people out there -- we will be glad to provide more help on how to use Ciao from the command line if needed. Also, as Jose pointed out, if there is user demand for including editing and manual access directly in the top level, it is straightforward to do, so please let us know! We tried (with the latest snapshot, 1.15.0 14751) on a fresh openSUSE 12.1 and it worked fine, producing the following two entries: Ciao System Manuals * ciao-1.15.0: (ciao-1.15.0). The Ciao System (version 1.15 of 2011/7/8) * lpdoc-3.0.0: (lpdoc-3.0.0). The lpdoc Documentation Generator (version 3.0 of 2011/7/7) and both are in /usr/share/info. It may be a glitch in a particular night build (perhaps the lpdoc manual was not generated due to some error). Please try with the current snapshot. > From the command line, the command: > info lpdoc > produces a man file! > Is this expected behaviour? Yes, this is standard info behaviour: if an info file is not found for a command and a man file exists then the man file is shown. The installation Ciao leaves simple "stub" man files for the main Ciao command line tools that point to the info files. Since the lpdoc info file was not installed the info command found the small lpdoc man file. Regarding lpdoc, the easiest way to get started is to open a .pl file in emacs and push the "generate documentation for the buffer" button or menu entry (you may need to do it twice the first time). This will generate by default documentation in html. Pushing the "view documentation..." button opens the generated documentation in a browser. Assertions can be used to easily produce richer documentation. Here is a very simple example (see the system libraries for extensive examples): > :- module(_,_,[assertions]). > > :- pred p/1 => int # "Returns a 1". > > p(1). Ciao + Lpdoc problems

Hi everyone After trying for some weeks to learn to use lpdoc, I'm forced to throw myself on the mercy of the group again! 1. On openSUSE 12.1 a. I tried to use the 1.14.2 version with lpdoc 3 The warnings that the lpdoc documentation is out of date seem only too true! In particular, I could not find a way to persuade it that lpSETTINGS.pl existed. So I abandoned 1.14 and downloaded the 1.15 RPM and installed it on a fresh Linux system using the command: rpm -Uvh The installation worked fine! Opening a .pl file with emacs showed the full Ciao menus (including lpdoc menu items). But I am mystified why? I did nothing to /etc/profile or ~/.profile to call the DOT files or to ~/.emacs to load the ciao .el files but they work. Why do they work? What does not work is attempts to call lpdoc. info. I checked the main info/dir (/usr/share/info/dir) and there was an entry for Ciao but not for lpdoc. This may be because lpdoc has been folded into the ciao info file. Apple Mac OSX 10.6.8 The development package works OK here except that Aquamacs program displays only 2 Ciao menu items but has a >> icon which leads to the CiaoPP and Lpdoc menu items which do seem to work OK too. Is this expected behaviour. (I tried ordinary emacs but it didn't seem to pick up Ciao mode at all). Playing with the OSX Ciao, I found that setting environment vars in a terminal window did not seem to work system-wide. I realise that this question is beyond the scope of this group, but does anyone know the "correct" way to set env vars globally on the Mac? 3. CiaoPP Is this application available to play with? Emacs can't find Ciao info file

* Mac OSX Lion * Ciao 1.14.2 * Emacs 24 I've installed Ciao using the Mac OSX installer. I've configured my shell to load the CIAOLIBDIR/DOTprofile file upon login per the Ciao docs, and can verify that it gets loaded. I start Emacs, open a "foo.pl" file, and successfully get the Ciao mode. However, when I use the menu to go to the "Ciao system manual", it claims "Could not find ciao: manual in info dir". In addition to having the INFOPATH variable set, I also manually add the "/usr/local/share/info" directory to 'Info-directory-list in Emacs. Since there's only a file " ciao-1.14.2.info" in that folder, I've also made a symlink to just " ciao.info" in the same folder to see if that would work. None of the above has worked. What can I do to get Emacs to incorporate the Ciao info file? I've followed these instructions<http://ciaohome.org/docs/branches/1.14/13646/CiaoDE-1.14.2-13646_ciao.html/… of the Ciao emacs interface> to get my Emacs env setup, but I'm obviously missing something. Timing in Ciao?

How do people run simple timing tests in Ciao? In SWI-Prolog I can do the following: benchmark1 :- flag(benchmark,_,0), repeat, zebra1(Houses, WaterDrinker, ZebraOwner), flag(benchmark,N,N+1), N = 1000, !. benchmark :- time(benchmark1). What is the equivalent in Ciao? Thanks! David

We switched some time ago to the current installer-based method which do not really need instructions. Make sure you install things as administrator (this is necessary due to changes in windows 7 and XP), i.e., go to the folder into which the installer file has been downloaded, click on it with the right mouse button, and select in the menu "run as administrator".
